In 2010 my daughter-in-law went to work among the Tzʼutujil (Maya) people of Lago de Atitlań, Guatemala. As a doctor she be served at a clinic in Santiago de Atitlań but also traveled by boat to isolated villages around the shore of the lake. She learned more than she probably expected about the people and the tragic genocide of a brutal civil war in that country. She learned the Tz’utuiil language while there, but her Spanish was also helpful. Through her experiences our family also learned about these beautiful indigenous people. Coincidentally, Dr. Laura served the large Sudanese immigrant community of Omaha, NE while completing her residency there.
In March of this year lawyer/activist Valerie Kaur visited Guatemala to learn more herself about the Mayan people’s struggle there.

Finally, Valerie along Friar Richard Rohr and Brian McLaren hosted a virtual event that focused on “divine rage” which is what I have personally been trying to practice in these times, especially in my own country (USA). Here is today’s CAC reflection featuring Valerie’s remarks.

Hoofnote: The Way of Love
“If I speak with human eloquence and angelic ecstasy but don’t love, I’m nothing but the creaking of a rusty gate.
If I speak God’s Word with power, revealing all his mysteries and making everything plain as day, and if I have faith that says to a mountain, “Jump,” and it jumps, but I don’t love, I’m nothing.
If I give everything I own to the poor and even go to the stake to be burned as a martyr, but I don’t love, I’ve gotten nowhere. So, no matter what I say, what I believe, and what I do, I’m bankrupt without love.” —the apostle of Christ named Paul in a letter to people of The Way
My own personal rage is only effective to the degree that I am surrendered to Divine LOVE, otherwise I’m just a banging gong.
