Weegie…no not that board game thing
Weegie or Glaswegian is the local dialect of Glasgow, Scotland. Now some might think it’s typical Scots but they’d be wrong. This is a “language” all its own and reflects not just Scottish commoner tendencies but the Irish ☘️ Scots too. My recently deceased cousin James Watters was part of our family that emigrated to Glasgow from Ireland in the late 19th and early 20th century. His daughter Colleen lives way out on the Kintyre Peninsula across from the Emerald Isle. This dialect (slang) is prototypical of Glasgow and its urban subdivisions flavored with a bit of Bushmills.
My favorite Irish terms I’ve been using a lot, especially lately as buck eejits and gobshites take over my country. But I’m turning to several of my favorites from BBC Scotland’s series “Still Game.”
Yer aff yer heid – Translation: You’re off your head – a little bit daft. (For those friends who voted for Trump, kinder than eejit or gobshite.)
